Help!

My dear readers, I'm afraid I must ask for your assistance...

I've been having a bit of trouble reading these past few weeks.  I don't mean dyslexia or anything, rather, I can't find anything that really grabs my attention.  I've read a ton of stuff, started a lot of books, but I've not found anything that really wows me.....nothing that makes me think Now THAT was a really good book!  It just feels mechanical and dull.  I just don't feel motivated (and being an English major, that is the kiss of death!)

So, that's where you guys come in.... Does anyone have a good book to recommend?  A real page turner for me to sink my teeth into?  I'd really appreciate your suggestions, and please rest assured that genre does not matter!  All I know is that if I don't read a good book soon, I'm afraid this disenchanted bookworm will turn into an illiterate pumpkin before the first day of classes!

  1. Have you read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? That is one of the most engaging, and satisfying books I have ever read.
I also recently read Peace Like a River, which I really enjoyed.
How about Life of Pi? The Stranger?
Oh! I know! Catch Me If You Can! One of my favorites.
Also, when I find myself in a reading slump, I like to pick up a cheap-thrills detective novel that I can breeze through in a few hours. Something from Robert B. Parker usually fits the bill.

These were my suggestions Emmy. Of course there are thousands of books that are great! Such as literary works of Albert Camus, Franz Kafka, Nikos Kazantzakis, American and Russian writers.
but I wanted to suggest some books that you may have not read them.

  3. I just recently read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. I enjoyed it.

I'm still having trouble being motivated to read. I hope to heaven this doesn't happen to you. It's the worst.

  5. Azted - Gary Jennings
The Source - James Michener or any of the historical novels by Mr Michener,
    Caravans is especially timely.
Contact - Carl Sagan, imagine science fiction by a scientist. The only novel he wrote.
    Lucy - Laurence Gonzales
Dragonriders of Pern Series - Anne McCaffrey
Ringworld - Larry Niven or any by him
The Hammer of God - Author C Clark and many others by him. I started reading his books in the 1950's and I still haven't read them all. I quote him a lot.

I could go on and on but I already have a bad case of goosebumps just remembering these.

    Anything by China Mieville.

If you're feeling adventurous (and free from personality disorders) give Mark Danielewski's "House of Leaves" a go.

Also- This is TSC, but I'm having trouble logging in on this office computer...

  10. Best book ever (I think) is Carter beats the devil. Glen D Gold's first novel. Really, just read the first half of a page and you'll be sucked in! It's romantic, adventurous, funny, and so well written!
